The University of California, Irvine has a long
history of social engagement.
As a leading public research University, an important part of its
mission is to showcase and disseminate
the research and scholarship of the University to the public.
Open educational content is a concept that will advance human
knowledge, creativity,
lifelong learning, and the social welfare of educators, students,
and self-learners across the globe.
As a proud member of the OCW (Open Course Ware) Consortium, the University of
California,
Irvine strives to meet the following goals:
•To meet the University of California’s desire to play a significant
role in the contribution
to the social welfare of the state, the nation and the world.
•To showcase the University’s top instructional efforts and make
those course materials
free on a global scale to educators, students, and self-learners.

modifiable
under Creative Commons licenses
Open Course Ware is a free and open digital publication of high
quality university-level educational materials, often including
syllabi, lecture notes, assignments and exams.
Open educational resources are based on the notion that knowledge
and education are common goods that must be supported by a defined
community.

The word CODEC is a combination of Code
and Decode.
When ever you Record or Play Audio or Video as well as
take Photos, the files that you create, or that your
player plays or viewer views, are compressed with an
algorithm or Encoded.
This is done to reduce the size requirements of the file
information representing your audio or video.
Different file types, and even the parameters within the
file types, produce varying degrees of audio video and
picture quality.
The different types of encoding have different file
extensions or file types, the 3 characters after the dot
in a file name.
These different file extensions let you know what type
of file compression algorithm was used for that
particular file.
Other information pertaining to parameters of the
compression for a particular file, are embedded within
the file itself.
If you don't have the necessary CODEC installed for a
file you are attempting to record or convert, you will
not be able to record or convert it.
If you don't have the necessary CODEC installed for a
file you are attempting to play, you will not be able to
play it.
