Things to look for when shopping for a Droid Tablet

Processor / CPU Selection |
|
Processor selection is important! There are many
low priced
Tablet PC's available with processors that are inadequate, too slow to render
video, or even give a tolerable user experience. Processors that are
Too Slow ARE: VIA 8505 (400MHz), and Ingenic JZ4760 (600 MHz but
still too slow!)

Notes:
Infotmic X220 includes an integrated GPS feature, and the
X210 processor does not. The Infotmic processors are
not Cortex A8, that is a highly exploited "for profit"
rumor. Yes, i.MX515 is faster at 800 MHz than some 1GHz
Processors, due to processor architecture. (Note the DMIPS)
Rock Chip Processor Speeds listed are the MAX CPU FREQUENCY
listed in the Manufacturers Data. Tablets with 600MHz Rock
Chips are either an RK2818, or an RK2808 that is either over
clocked or its speed is rounded up. DMIPS above are
calculated for a 1 Second period of time, based on the speed
and architecture of the Processor. More DMIPS above = a
faster Processor. These DMIPS numbers are proportional to
speed. |

Presently, I recommend looking for at least
the TCC8902 or the X220 Processors for a low priced Tablet PC choice. If
the Processor is too slow, purchasing the Tablet PC will be a waste of money. This
is one of the first and most important specifications I look for, when choosing a
Tablet PC. There is a Blog with more Processor information for comparison
here. Many
times you will see a Tablet PC seller listing their Tablets
processor as "Dual Core". What they are claiming, in
addition to the CPU, is the Display
Processor/Co-Processor.
NOTE: Apple iPad uses a 1GHz Apple/Samsung A4 Chip
which is a Cortex A8 Processor - PowerVR SGX535 (2000 DMIPS)
Apple iPad 2 uses a 1 GHz Apple/Samsung A5 Chip which is a Cortex A9

Android Operating System Selection |
|
There are many Tablet PC's with many different versions of the
Android Operating System. As the Android Operating System evolves, it gains more
compatibility, and abilities. One key area of popular concern is the version of Adobe Flash
the Operating System is compatible with.
|

Your Tablet may have issues rendering Flash content utilizing
only the latest Flash version. This would be most apparent when browsing the
web sites utilizing content in the latest Flash version. For this reason you want to select a Tablet PC with the most up to
date version of the Android Operating System in your price range. Make sure the manufacturer of your Tablet PC will be providing flash
/ operating system updates for your Tablet PC. Some manufacturers claim they
have no intent to ever provide updates to certain Tablets. (Beware!)
Considering the vast selection of devices currently available around a
reasonable price point, come with at least the Android 2.1 Operating
System, I would presently recommend 2.1 be the lowest version of the Android operating
system you consider. Do not attempt to flash your Tablet with a flash update that
is not specifically for your Tablet, as it will most likely render it
non-functional! This is also one of the first and most important Specifications I look for when
choosing a Tablet PC. The Android Operating System is based on Linux. Also
worthy of mention: Android Market wants to make sure
that they create an application distribution mechanism for the Android Market,
that ensures their users have the right experience.
For that reason, Android Market is not going to be available on devices that
don't allow applications to run correctly.
Which devices do, and which don't, will be unit specific.
Froyo (Android 2.2) and lower are not optimized for use on tablets.
Because the apps wont all run correctly, Android Market wont allow access to Froyo
(Android 2.2) platform tablet users. This does not exclude the possibility of
adding Android Market to your Tablet PC after you purchase it, but it will
almost surely not come pre-installed. The "Honeycomb"
upgrade to Android, is the
first version of Android designed for tablets instead of smart phones. Many times
devices can be "rooted" (add other firmware to the device). For this do a Google
and / or YouTube Search. Do this at your own risk! |
|
Market Access |
|
Market Access is important! (Application Market that is...) The Market Access the Tablet has, or is compatible with, determines what
applications you will be able to obtain for your Tablet PC after you purchase
it! The applications you load on your Tablet, are the software programs that
make the Tablet do things. Without applications you have a computer with no
programs to run on it. The Android Market is the market you want to look for.
Google Android Market is the original market for the Android Operating System. Not
every Tablet PC has access to the Android Market. There are other markets, and
while some of them are really good, they are not the Android Market! Make
sure your Tablet will have access to plenty of awesome applications, by making
sure it can access to the right market.
Note: eoeMarket is in Chinese. If you only speak English,
this may be an issue for you. Android Market wants to make sure
that they create an application distribution mechanism for the Android Market,
that ensures their users have the right experience.
The "Honeycomb" upgrade to Android,
which is already available in several versions, is the
first version of Android designed for tablets instead of smart phones. If you
can get this on your Tablet, it is highly recommended. |
|
Tablet Size |
|
Tablet PC sizes range from approximately 5" to 10".
Get smaller than
5" and you will be looking at an Android based smart phone, not a Tablet PC. The original Tablet
PC that started the flood of Tablet PC's on the market is the well known Apple
iPad. iPads where approximately a 9" Tablet PC. There are pros and cons
to each size, and neither one can be said to be better than the other. Your selection should be based on your personal usage, and
needs for the device. The larger Tablets offer a larger display, and virtual keyboard
for when you
are typing, as well as being slightly less expensive for the included options. The smaller Tablets are lighter, and much more portable than their
larger counter parts. The larger Tablets while nice to look at, and type on,
must
be carried around, while the smaller ones could fit in a LARGE pocket, or a
ladies purse. |
|
Built in Storage Capacity |
|
Most of the Tablet PC's offer Built in Storage. The capacity of
the storage varies. The most
common capacity is 2 Gig. The next most common capacity is 1 Gig followed lastly by 4 Gig. More
is better! This is the actual space that most or all your apps and common
personal files will reside in. Note: You will want to obtain a micro SD memory
card for additional storage Do not confuse the 256 Meg, 512 Meg, or 128 Meg
of DDR2 RAM / Memory with the Flash Memory used for storage. |
|
Common Features Most Tablet PC's Include |
|
There are many common features provided on current Android based Tablet PC's.
Most of the current Tablet PC's
seem to include the following standard features: 256 Meg of DDR2 RAM / Memory
(MOST but not all have 256 Meg - don't get 128 Meg - some have 512 Meg - 512 Meg
is a bonus!) 802.11 b/g wireless networking - commonly used for wireless
internet access - wireless (Wi-Fi) Hot Spots. A speaker or speakers
for sound A micro SD slot handling up to 32 Gig micro SD memory cards
(commonly referred to as a TF card in the device specifications) At least
1-USB interface. USB 1.1 has 12 Mb/s of bandwidth (speed), and USB 2.0 has 480
Mb/s of bandwidth. Most Tablets offer USB 2.0 A Common use for the USB connection
is a keyboard, and sometimes a mouse.
|
|
Other Available Droid Tablet Options |
|
Other non-standard options include: Camera - The resolution is
rated in Mega pixels. More pixels is better. .3Megapixel (800X600) is common
followed by 1.3Megapixel. It is common to include a microphone (mic) when there
is a camera, because the Tablets will record video, as well as taking photo's.
Accelerometer or G sensor - This senses the
orientation of the Tablet, and rotates the display to correspond with the way
you are holding the Tablet. The G sensor is also used with video games as a user
input to control something in the game.
HDMI output - This allows you to connect your Tablet to
your HD Television to view videos and other content on your Television.
GPS - Global Positioning System - This uses satellites in
geosynchronous orbits to determine your position. This is commonly used with
Google Maps on Droid Tablets in order to display your location on a map. It can
also be used to navigate from where you are, to a desired destination.
3G - Wireless Broadband Internet service provided by your
cellular provider. The SIM card from your cellular provider is inserted into the
SIM slot on your 3G capable Tablet PC. You can then use the 3G service from your
cellular provider for internet access.
Bluetooth - This allows you to wirelessly connect to
Bluetooth devices, such as headsets, cell phones, printers, and possibly a
wireless mouse and keyboard (if supported). Cell Phones may be wirelessly
tethered using Bluetooth, in order to utilize their internet connection when
away from Wi-Fi.
|
|
Work Arounds for Some Options |
|
The work arounds presented here involve taking advantage of the
cell phone you already have. Many modern cell phones have 3G or 4G broadband
internet capabilities, and more and more cell phones also have built in GPS
capabilities. Almost every modern Cell phones has Bluetooth capabilities built
in. Add a low profile USB Bluetooth adapter (if your tablet
doesn't have Bluetooth built in - most don't) to wirelessly tether/connect the
Tablet PC to your cell phone. This allows you to wirelessly use your cell phones
3G or 4G broadband internet connection, when there is no Wi-Fi Hotspot
available. (Hint works for Laptops too!), as well as your cell phones GPS (if
you have one). If you don't have Bluetooth capability for both
your Tablet PC and your cell phone, you can use a USB cable to tether/connect
them, in order to take advantage of your cell phones 3G/4G and/or GPS
capabilities. |

Comparison of Inexpensive Droid Tablets Readily Available in the USA |
The Droid Tablet PC's Compared here are in the price range from $150 to $350 (This
Price range has been selected as a low to reasonable price point, and to yield
at least a usable device.) (Some price changes over time, have caused some
listed tablets prices to be lower. You usually get what you pay for!)
Prices and selection are current as of 10/1/2011 Information presented here is
derived from third parties, and third party web sites. Every effort has been made to insure the accuracy of the information
collected, organized, and presented here. The collection and organization of the
information presented here has been done as a convenience to visitors of this web site. There is No Guarantee on the accuracy of any of the information
presented, or that it will remain accurate for any period of time. There are many more Droid Tablet PC's
on the market, with even more becoming
available, all the time. These are Hot items, and there are many
manufacturers in China producing new offerings, so frequently it is almost
impossible to keep up. For Americans, dealing with China may be riddled with issues.
Some of the common issues are: not receiving
what you ordered, receiving, or exchanging damaged products, and getting your
item through customs. For this
reason it makes sense to obtain your Tablet PC from a reputable American
company. These American companies will seek to provide the products people want, and will
function as both a buffer, and a filter on our behalf's. They want to make a
profit, so they will seek the products with features we all want, and procure
them from the manufacturers, in order to sell them to us. They want to avoid loss. If a product doesn't deliver,
or is unreliable,
sales would plummet, and they would be
swamped with returns. Many American companies are beginning to stock a fairly
diverse selection of reasonably priced Droid Tablet PC's. These American companies also are able to purchase large quantities, at huge
discounts, and pass some of that discount on to us. For these reasons it makes
sense to consider what they have to offer, and to make our purchase from one of
them. This guide as well as the following comparison tables have been assembled
as an aid to the visitors of this web site. I hope you will find this
information helpful!
