First you need to temporarily disable, or if you are installing AVG, Uninstall your Current Anti-Virus Program.
If you are un-installing your current Anti-Virus Software, basic instructions will be provided on how to do that on this page.
If you are not replacing your current Anti-Virus, and only wish to install Windows Defender, then temporarily disable your current Anti-Virus, and skip the "Uninstalling Your Current Anti-Virus" section.
Many Computers are currently coming pre-installed with some version of Norton Anti-Virus or other Anti-Virus programs with a 60 Day trial.
At the conclusion of the 60 day trial one is left with the option to purchase / Renew their subscription, or be left un-protected from new threats.
You may also have some other expired Anti-Virus Software and are looking for a new Anti-Virus solution to replace your old one.
The combination of Windows Defender and AVG Free was a powerful FREE Solution, providing free lifetime updates.
Since AVG 2011 Free Windows Defender is no longer need to supplement your protection! AVG 2011 Free is good on it's own!!!
Just because they are free does not make this free solution less than formidable, in fact it can out perform some well known paid solutions.
Performance results for Anti-Virus software solutions will vary from month to month as each receives its regular updates.
What is superior this month may not be next month.
The proposed AVG  and Windows Defender solution utilized  free programs that consistently rank among the highest in tests for their niche. Together they offered a complete solution that does not leave holes un-protected in your security. Since AVG 2011 FREE, Windows Defender is not needed.
AVG 2011 Free Now Provides Root Kit, as well as Spyware Protection. (Windows Defender is no longer needed with AVG Since AVG 2011!)Malwarebytes is still an excellent Free on demand Scanner to supplement any Anti-Virus solution with, by doing monthly manual scans.
I have also added Microsoft Security Essentials, with it's "Real Time Protection" Disabled. In this mode it runs scheduled Weekly Scans, and is also available for manual scanning.
There are also log in programs such as KeePass on the Best You Can Get Download Page, to securely maintain a database of your log ins, and their URL's. KeePass can take you to the web site and log you in all from data in your KeePass Data base. It will just take a little bit of time to set it up, but it is also free for life. You could allow Windows to store your user IDs and passwords to log you in, but that is not as secure, however,  this may be adequate for some people.
      This Page is presented in the order of operations necessary to successfully  remove your old software and install these solutions.

Left Click the "Start" button at the bottom left of your Desktop.
Left Click "ControlPanel".
Left Click "Programs and Features".
Wait for Windows to populate the list of Installed Programs on your computer.
Scroll through the list to find your Anti-Virus Software. (Hint-It may be under the manufacturers name).
When you find it left click on it.
Left Click "Remove"
Follow any un-install dialogs that may appear to the completion of the un-install.
Re-Boot your computer.

Note: No Longer Needed since AVG 2011 Free (Skip to Installing AVG).

Select your Operating System:
Windows XP
Windows Vista
Windows 7

In Windows XP:

Click: Start
Click: Control Panel
Click: "Windows Defender" or "Software Explorers" (which ever one you have) to access a Windows Defender interface.
If you see this message:

Windows Defender is turned off
Windows Defender won't provide protection against harmful or
potentially unwanted software and it won't send you alerts
because it is off.
To help protect your computer against harmful or potentially
unwanted software, Turn on and open Windows Defender.

You will notice the words "Turn on and open Windows Defender" is a blue  link to turn on and open Windows Defender.

Click the blue words: "Turn on and open Windows Defender".

If you Clicked on "Software Explorers": your Windows Defender is in a software explorer mode, and you will need to Click "Home".

Make sure Windows Defender updates its definitions and possibly its self if it has not been running.
It should be set to automatically update its self. You should make sure.
Let Windows Defender scan your system, if it needs to.
Leave Windows Defender Active / Running (Protecting Your System) when you close Windows Defender.

In Windows Vista, and Windows 7:
Click the Start button.
In the search box, type Defender.
In the list of results, click Windows Defender.

If you see this message:

Windows Defender is turned off
Windows Defender won't provide protection against harmful or
potentially unwanted software and it won't send you alerts
because it is off.
To help protect your computer against harmful or potentially
unwanted software, Turn on and open Windows Defender.

Installation instructions:

Download Windows Defender
Left click on Run or Save.

If you clicked "Save": Double left click the WindowsDefender.msi file you downloaded.
If you clicked "Open" or Double left clicked on the WindowsDefender.msi file you downloaded:

Left Click "Run" on the "Open File - Security Warning" window that appears.
Left Click "Next" on the "Welcome to the Installation Wizard for Windows Defender" window that appears.
Left Click "Validate" on the "Validate Your Genuine Copy of Microsoft Windows" window that appears.
Left Click the "I Accept" button on the "Windows Defender License Agreement" Window that appears.
Left Click "Next" on the "Windows Defender License Agreement" Window.
Left Click the "Use Recommended Settings" option on the "Help Protect Windows" Window.

          Other Options (not recommended):
          Install Definition Updates Only (Does Not Join SpyNet)
          Ask Me Later (Leaves You Totally Voulnerable - Must be Configured Later)

Left Click "Next" on the "Help Protect Windows" Window.
Left Click "Complete" on the "Setup Type" Window.
Left Click "Next" on the "Setup Type" Window.
Left Click "Install" on the "Ready to Install Windows Defender" Window.
Leave the box Checked to "Check for updated definitions and run a quick scan now"
Left Click "Finish" on the "Windows Defender Install Complete" Window.
Windows Defenders interface will open up and Windows Defender will check for updates.
New Definitions or Updates will be Automatically Installed.

Make sure your Current Anti-Virus software is  uninstalled, and be sure you re-booted after un-installing your old Anti-Virus software, and close any open programs before following the rest of these instructions to install AVG.
 

Installation instructions:

Download "AVG Free"

Double Left Click the "AVG Free" File you Downloaded.
Click the "Accept Button" on the license agreement Window.
Click the "Basic Protection" Button for "AVG Anti-Virus Free".
Click the "Next" Button on the "Select the product you wish to install" Window.
Click the "Custom Install" Button on the "Select type of installation" Window.
Click the "Next" Button on the "Select type of installation" Window.
Check the Box for "Personal E-mail Scanner" (for all other e-mail applications) on the "Custom Options" window.
Check the Box "Plugin for Microsoft Office" on the "Custom Options" window.
Note: Make sure that all boxes are checked with the exception of additional languages on the "Custom Options" window.
Click the "Next" Button on the "Custom Options" window.
You don't need "AVG Security Tool Bar" and "Set AVG Secure Search as my default search provider". These can be un-checked (your option).
"AVG Security Tool Bar" and "Set AVG Secure Search as my default search provider" are optional, and can be disabled later if it slows your browser down too much.
Click "Next" to Install AVG.
Choose how you heard about AVG from the drop down, optionally support AVG. and or get emails, and Click "Finish".
Click "Yes" on the "To finalize the installation an immediate reboot is necessary. Do you want to reboot now?" window.

When the application loads for the first time it will download the latest Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware definitions for AVG)

Make Sure Windows Firewall is Turned on
AVG 2011Free Now has a built in Firewall. Windows Firewall can still be active along with AVG.

Instructions - follow these steps in order from the top of page to bottom:

Windows Vista and Windows XP:
Left Click the "Start" button
Left Click "Control Panel"
Left Click "Windows Firewall" in the "Control Panel"
 

If Windows Firewall is off, turn it on! (If you had a Norton Anti-Virus product, it was most likely turned off by Norton to use Norton's Firewall).
 

Windows Vista Only Windows XP may skip this section:
In the "Windows Firewall" Window you may see a message stating "Your computer is not protected: turn on Windows Firewall"
Look for "Turn Windows Firewall on or off" in the left side column of the "Windows Firewall" Window.
Left Click on "Turn Windows Firewall on or off" on the "Windows Firewall" Window.
End Windows Vista Only CONTINUE Windows Vista and Windows XP

Windows Vista and Windows XP:
Verify that the button is on next to "On (recommended)" if it is not Left Click the "On (recommended)" button on the Windows Firewall Settings Window.
Left Click "OK" on the Windows Firewall Settings Window.
Congratulations! Windows Firewall is on and active.
If you have been following these steps from the beginning of this page, Anti-Virus, and Anti- adware, spyware are now active as well.
You have completed all the steps necessary for your computer to be protected!

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Installation Instructions:

Download Malwarebytes'.
Double Left Click on the file you downloaded.
Left Click "RUN" on the "Open File - Security Warning" Window.
Left Click the drop down and select your setup language with a left click on the "Select Setup Language" window. Default is English (Requires you to do nothing)
Left Click the "OK" button on the "Select Setup Language" window.
Left Click the "Next" button on the "Setup - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware" window.
Left Click the "I Accept" button on the "License Agreement" Window.
Left Click the "Next" button on the "License Agreement" Window.
Left Click the "Next" button on the "Information" Window.
Left Click the "Next" button on the "Select Destination Location" Window.
Left Click the "Next" button on the "Select Start Menu Folder" Window.
Left Click the "Next" button on the "Select Additional Tasks" Window.
Left Click the "Install" button on the "Ready to Install" Window.
Wait during the "Installing" Window, the progress bar indicates progress for the installation.
Left Click the "Finish" button on the "Completing the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Setup Wizard" window.
Wait while Malwarebytes' updates its self.
Left Click the "OK" button the "the database was successfully updated from version ---- to version ----" window.

Malwarebytes' should now open up to it's interface for the first time.

Left click the "Scan" button.
Malwarebytes' should indicate that there is a scan in progress.
The scan will take several minutes, as Malwarebytes' scans your machine for infections.
Don't be surprised if Malwarebytes' finds several infections.
When Malwarebytes' is done it's scan of your computer, Left Click "OK".
Next Left Click the "Show Results" button.
Left click the "Remove Selected" button.
Left Click the button on the "Log" window.
Left Click "Yes" on the "All selected items removed successfully...Reboot" window.
Malwarebytes' will re-boot your computer.
